They removed the cast she has been in since her surgery. Her foster dad said that she is hesitant to use her left leg now that the cast is off. But, that was expected. We're sure that over the next few weeks she will begin to use her leg more and more.

Even with all that Daisy has been through over the past few months, she is keeping a positive attitude. Her foster dad says that she gets along great with his dog:-) They're all three happy just hanging out!

Thank you all for keeping up with Daisy's story and sending lots of thoughts and prayers. Daisy sends her love to each of you!!!

XOXO,

Daisy and MarcieMarcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-29919039590032709932009-05-08T06:13:00.001-07:002009-05-08T06:18:37.394-07:00Sad and Happy News for DaisyUnfortunately, Daisy's forever home did not work out. Daisy is a special girl and will need extra care throughout her life. Although the family had the best of intentions for Daisy, it was just not the right fit.

The good news is that Daisy had her second surgery on Wednesday! She is recovering comfortably in her new foster home in Connecticut. The ortho vet said that her left leg will be very close to perfect once it heals! Daisy will be in a cast for 4 to 6 weeks. We're so excited for Daisy!

I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Daisy sends you all hugs and kisses!!!Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-74740071122727355092009-02-04T06:05:00.000-08:002009-02-05T05:54:43.545-08:00No Surgery for DaisyAt least not for at least six to eight weeks. Daisy went back to Knoxville for x-rays and her second surgery on Monday. After driving two hours in the snow and poor Daisy vomiting all over herself from being carsick, we were told we have to wait a minimum of six to eight additional weeks for surgery on her left leg.

There was a miscommunication after the first surgery. We were told there would be a two month recovery period between procedures. However, the surgeon did not tell us that the surgery on her elbow could take three to four months to heal.

As of now the plan is to have more x-rays in six weeks. If those look good, we will schedule the surgery for the end of March.

Please continue to keep Daisy in your thoughts and prayers. While she is off strict crate rest, she is not allowed to play with other dogs or run off leash. It's not easy for such a young pup to stay calm and confined for so long.Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-78805834392751808082009-01-29T08:36:00.000-08:002009-01-29T08:45:12.234-08:00Update on DaisySince Daisy had the steroid injection and antibiotic she has been doing great! It looks like this has helped her reaction to the internal suture and she shouldn't need further treatment.

Daisy will go to Knoxville for a checkup and x-rays of her right leg on Monday. If everything looks good, she will stay and have surgery on Tuesday. I will update as soon as I know more.

Thanks for keeping Daisy in your thoughts!!!

Marcie, Daisy's foster momMarcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-28665741949928144912009-01-22T10:43:00.000-08:002009-01-22T10:54:20.351-08:00A Small Bump in the RoadDaisy is having a reaction to one of her internal sutures. She went to the vet today and was given a steroid injection and an oral antibiotic. If it doesn't clear up she will need to have it removed. If that's the case, we'll just let the surgeon do that when he does the surgery on her left arm in a little over a week.

Other than that she is doing great! Only 11 more days!!!Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-79938367400280809512009-01-19T06:51:00.000-08:002009-01-19T07:38:51.586-08:00Two weeks and counting!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiBi7ax3uXxgM8S7v60UvzKcZbUZdyfffXm0Zfv53qGYKgSZWUZVioZ7ViyhCUyAwWPulFDpIzDmsRROhQn3z89SfG-XEqLRUjNj5xIECBpWfSvq_81YB3gSpYrUUC0ryfjsFnZGCaFi7l/s320/Daisy_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293029361338667794" />
Daisy continues to improve daily. She has the most amazing attitude. Her leg looks great! I need to post before and after pictures so you can see the difference. She is still hesitant to put weight on it from time to time. But, I imagine some of that is simply habit. Her right leg was the most painful and even before the surgery she would hop along on three legs sometimes. She is going for several very short walks a day now. We're getting very excited for her second surgery - it's only two weeks away! Please remember to keep Daisy in your thoughts and prayers :-)Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-35236004352343382432009-01-06T05:22:00.001-08:002009-01-06T10:43:18.084-08:00Sweet DaisyThe past few weeks have been very difficult for Daisy. I'm sure it would be difficult for any dog to be confined to a crate during recovery from surgery. But, I can't help but feel especially bad for Daisy because she is only a year old. She should be running and playing like other puppies. I get so angry when I think about what she has gone through and what she will go through just to reach a normal place in life. But, then I look at her and she seems to smile at me with her sweet eyes. Maybe she is here to teach me to look at the positives in life rather than focus on the negatives.

Daisy seems to have no memory of what her life was like before. She seems to enjoy every moment - good and bad. No one will ever really know Daisy's story - not what she lived in day to day. But, I believe that's how she would want it. I don't believe Daisy would want anyone to feel sorry for her or angry for anything in her past. She wants to move forward and forget her past. We will help her do that.

The first week in February will mark two months since the surgery on her right leg. The orthopedic surgeon wanted to wait a couple of months between surgeries to allow her right leg time to heal. She will return to UT on Monday, February 2, for x-rays and a checkup. If all is well and her right leg is healing the way it should, she will stay overnight and have the second surgery the following day. Please send Daisy all the good thoughts and prayers you can! We want this sweet girl to have both surgeries in her past and be able to run and play by Spring or Summer 2009!Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-23605121851084857972009-01-01T05:26:00.001-08:002009-01-01T07:05:58.023-08:00Happy New Year!!!Daisy and I want to wish you all a Happy New Year!!! We hope 2009 is an amazing year for everyone!

Daisy is feeling much better. She is a little sad from having to stay in her crate so much. But, her leg looks great! We removed her stitches yesterday. The incisions are healing very nicely. She is beginning to put more and more weight on her leg when she walks. The vet has allowed her to go on very short, slow walks that can increase as she feels up to it.

On Christmas Day the weather was beautiful and unseasonably warm. We were able to spend some time outside in the sunshine and Daisy LOVED it!

I will schedule Daisy's next appointment at UT Knoxville for mid to late January. If I understood the vet correctly we will take her for a check up and x-ray of her right leg. Assuming it is healing the way it should, they will do surgery on her left leg the following day.

We really have learned so much from Daisy through this experience. She has shown us how fortunate we are and how much we take for granted. What amazes me most is that despite her painful past, she shows nothing but love and affection to everyone she meets. My New Year's resolution is to try to learn from Daisy and face the world with more compassion and forgiveness.

We wish you all the best in 2009 and always!

Marcie and DaisyMarcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-87423337214323958022008-12-21T05:31:00.000-08:002008-12-21T05:33:43.601-08:00Pictures of my NEW leg!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8jCtmOUAqiN1EPvmsNfxTbZ82hZipWdNVGX2e-PTlVGZJMDFrWlGXdUbVcBnnetwdKesSJ29aZbUfUBgCY19x2umpzbl5eiSBZaRZR4o7tfup5Lme1TwfT9mN9iNosXlz8kqfzhHwLiRJ/s400/Daisy5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282235992712031554" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUT3uvD9fIPUckbH759fnZ5MsbiHpTvLZJVAFJyNgEov_noMqM90TO4DdkFJrMPhYT9zk-ukp_bdG-djG25neD9dxDyRnwNEaBogdXaEKTXrPIwHn5zmzA3H0-hsf_yuyo38S8pjJ6W1B5/s400/Daisy4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282235984852323010" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi235zPJlhjKxA2iqKdtfM6XRDoTXWwTLCjDUgnRqcnuBd0CRX68sg8qW7Cpiuyi6UtGmp43U3FVuEicVuU4a7M-csee6R-vy_A_YvdM7zuMU-P17rs42V-iTMM5D_jqvwKsXXJcz-X27-y/s400/Daisy3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282235982446734946" />Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-35929901998718886562008-12-21T05:09:00.000-08:002008-12-21T05:44:43.117-08:00I'm Getting Better Every Day!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvS0EfPGLnB8cAo7IMPHNAx7lUXMPomW5xFkAnmF6KjckVJk8MpUrLbs1GQbrpWDQY64IMfC9AFKUqlq07oXoLWvP09WXDbapCVIXmuZOOlxTGFL-iPo2pW4sc02atRyesaNe5b9FE9mDM/s320/Daisy8.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282238360401538338" />
Hello everyone! I wanted to let you know that I'm still doing well. I'm staying at my foster grandparents' home for a few more days. The doctor said I have to let them put ice on my leg to help with swelling. My grandma is really good at that. She talks to me and rubs my belly to help me stay calm and still while she takes care of me. While I've been here I've met two other dogs named Gabby and Angel. They like me a lot; but, of course I'm not allowed to play with them until I'm better. I do get to rub noses - I like that.

I've only been naughty one time. My first night here I pulled my grandma down in the yard. I saw a kitty and wanted to say hello to it. But, I've been careful not to do that anymore.

I wanted to show you some pictures of my leg. I know it looks kind of funny right now - I hope that doesn't bother anyone. But, it's getting better every day! It's already been almost 2 weeks! My foster mom is going to make my follow-up appointment at the hospital. As long as my right leg continues to heal, I will have my second surgery around mid to late January.

Thanks again everyone for all your thoughts and prayers! Keep them coming - I believe they're working :-) Also thanks for the donations. My foster family can't believe how much everyone is helping us!

XOXO,

DaisyMarcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-72330657063132396282008-12-19T05:59:00.000-08:002008-12-19T06:25:49.659-08:00I'm Home!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO-QLT_7qk-g9kR2KpGZjyfbeOgVkJBIbSinbXbiMUgaA_2kTFRKSNGKuYLtLql-9O7OKJOoE6G5Q7z4DOhqsQD04lnlkDf1nqz2Cu5Nt_AZ1FJAhBvNWAa02TGLdiP2Kd1VjlbsTmf9tc/s400/Daisy1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281507289320169298" />
Hello everyone! I finally talked my foster mom into letting me write a post. I just wanted to thank everyone for helping me and sending so many thoughts and prayers! I'm feeling much better now. Except that I want to play and my foster mom won't let me! I know, I know ... she says I have to be super careful with my leg or it won't heal the way it's supposed to. It's just so difficult to stay calm. I missed my foster brother and sister so much while I was at the hospital. I want to give them kisses and run around in the back yard like we did before. But, my foster mom is afraid I'll get hurt accidentally.

My leg hurts. My foster mom and dad, my aunt and my grandma have all been taking turns putting ice on my leg to help keep it from swelling anymore. I don't like that at all! But, I try to be good and hold still. I know they are only trying to help me. They also give me these things wrapped in cheese or peanut butter which make me feel better and help me sleep.

I'm staying with my foster grandpa and grandma for the weekend. They love me so much! I get lots of kisses and hugs from them. They have several funny little furry creatures that stare at me all the time. I think they're called cats - or something like that.

I'll included more pictures in my next post. This one was taken on my first night home from the hospital. I didn't really feel like having my picture taken but my foster mom said I had to.

Below I've posted a Christmas poem someone passed along to my foster mom. I hope every puppy out there gets a second chance like me ... that is my Christmas wish.

XOXO,

Daisy

On Christmas Morning..........I wish....

For every dog searching trash cans for breakfast, a filled bowl with his name printed in bright letters.

For every dog who slept fitfully last night, chained in a frozen yard, a soft, warm bed with a person snoring gently nearby.

For every shelter dog, spending Christmas morning in a soiled run, a forever home, filled with sounds & smells of family.

For every "Christmas" puppy given today, a tolerant, caring owner who won't abandon you as you grow into a real dog.

For every ailing pet, enough money for your owner to pay the bills to make you well.

For every lost dog, a clear, safe road, and well marked path to lead you home.

For every old & tired friend, a warm fire, and a soft bed, to ease your aches and pains.

And for every dog at the Bridge, a moment when you know that you are remembered today, missed again, and loved forever.

Author unknownMarcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-57437770454984970062008-12-18T06:54:00.000-08:002008-12-18T07:14:41.576-08:00Daisy is Home!Daisy came home last night after being at UT for a week. She is doing very well. Her leg is swollen; but, it looks better than it did before surgery. I think the biggest improvement is in her elbow. I can't believe how much smaller it is. She had so much scar tissue that it was as big as a tennis ball. The surgeon cleaned it up as much as possible.

I feel so bad for Daisy. She has to wear a e-collar any time that I am not with her. She is not wearing a cast. The doctors wanted her to use her leg as soon as possible. They felt a cast would discourage her from doing that.

She has to have ice on her leg three times a day. That's an adventure! I can't believe this sweet dog just had such an invasive surgery and she is ready to run and play already! Of course she is not allowed to do that - which makes her recovery a challenge. Daisy has pain medication which seems to sedate her. She sleeps a lot.

I do have pictures of her that I hope to post later today. Please keep Daisy in your thoughts and prayers.Marcie (Daisy's foster mom)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06196473060428124424noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-21790470471660987472008-12-16T12:23:00.000-08:002008-12-16T12:24:29.391-08:00Daisy's StoryDaisy is a 1-year-old black Labrador Retriever mix. She was destined to be euthanized by her former family simply because she suffered from allergies. Sweet Daisy is lucky to be alive and she knows it. She came into our foster home at 10 months old hairless and scared. After a few weeks on a quality food and fish oil with vitamin E, Daisy doesn't even resemble the frail, timid creature she was previously.

When Daisy was only a few months old she was hit by a car. This accident left Daisy with two mangled front legs. One was badly fractured and the other suffered extensive soft tissue damage. Her previous owners refused to pay for the necessary surgery and treatment which may have restored Daisy's legs to normal. As a result, Daisy learned to live with her badly deformed and painful legs.

After visiting a local orthopedic specialist we learned that Daisy could benefit from surgery to correct her foreleg injuries. Daisy was referred to University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. The veterinarian at UT confirmed that surgery would greatly improve Daisy's quality of life and save her from an almost certain amputation of her right front leg in the years to come.

Daisy will undergo two surgeries. The first will correct her previously fractured right leg - the most badly damaged leg. During this surgery, the orthopedic surgeon will also try to correct some of the damage to her right elbow. The stress of her deformed forearm has put an unnatural strain on her elbow - causing severe pain, scar tissue and arthritis.

After six weeks of healing, Daisy will return to UT for surgery on her left leg. This leg suffered extensive soft tissue damage during the accident. Because of her young age when the accident occurred Daisy's growth plates were not closed. As a result, she has suffered permanent damage to the development and growth of her leg. The surgeon will need to repair her twisted forearm to alleviate the stress it is putting on her already weakened wrist.

Daisy's first surgery was completed on December 11, 2008. She is recovering nicely and will return to her foster home on December 17, 2008. I will update as soon as Daisy is back with us. The veterinarians at UT have told me what an angel Daisy has been! Just one day after her painful surgery she was trying to play. Daisy is definitely a trooper. I believe we can all learn something about forgiveness from this sweet girl.

Daisy's surgeries will be very expensive. The estimates range between $5,000 and $7,000 for both legs. Without them, Daisy will not be able to live the full, happy life she deserves. We are asking for help for this sweet girl. This is what the vet described as her needs. These procedures are very expensive and the family needs your help to pay for it all. Daisy will be going to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to the vet school for help.

Has very severe orthopedic issues.

-Angular deformities of left elbow and carpus. Angular deformity and hyperextension of right carpus. We sedated him and took 2 x-rays views of each front leg.

-Right leg has an old malunion frac.-this has healed crooked and is destroying the elbow on the right side.

-Left leg is not as bad--some sort of surgery was done on the medial carpus-probably due to ligament damage from a HBC injury. This along with the extra weight bearing (due to opposite leg injury) is causing the carpus to overextend.

-Only place that could deal with theses issues is UT. Left leg (old fracture/elbow problem) is most pressing problem.Riverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03058881915873075643noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8583102977463089711.post-9354572300512492902008-11-16T13:03:00.000-08:002008-11-16T13:34:47.176-08:00Help Daisy

Daisy is almost a year old, now spayed and she has some damage to her front legs and feet.
